"Fried Fridays: Home is where the heart is..."

That has to be the Blue Whale of Hearts, then....geez, talk about excess...

Might not look like much from the above picture, but Arnold Chase of West Hartford, Connecticut is completing his...get this...50,900 square-foot mansion atop Avon Hill. To minimize the visual impact, only 16,800 square feet of it is above ground...

The specs are mind-boggling. Bigger than Bill Gate's mansion. Only 4,000 square feet smaller than the White House. Can't hold a candle to the Biltmore House, though, which is roughly 174,000 square feet. Largest single family home out there (being lived in), though it's big enough other families could hide in there and never be caught. The 33,500 square foot basement is in two tiers, wherein there is a 103-seat theater (with balcony) replete with ticket booth and concession stand. And check this out: Mr. Chase would rather people not know about it. Oopsie.

5 bedrooms. 8 full baths. 5 half-baths. The game room in the 'upper tier' of the basement is a mere 4,855 square feet, give or take a couple...and lest I forget, a 400 square foot observatory atop this humble abode.

First big question: Why? Because he can. Just like nobody needs a Ferrari, but those that can and wish to do. I can't imagine either of these comes without a healthy dose of ego, either. The second big question: How? Well, he's been highly successful as a businessman, leader of Gemini Networks best I could find out, and has been known to be very generous with his philanthropy.

Which leaves us with the two-edged sword of 'rights' vs. 'responsibilities'. It's his money, and he should be able to do with it what he pleases. I know I couldn't in all good, clear conscience go that route because of my value system that has been ingrained over the years: all too often I've fully understood what it meant to have just $10 in my pocket for a meal, some gas in the tank, and while there's nothing wrong with a wonderful home, I would too often wonder what I could put that $200,000 toward, socially, instead of having a fifth garden fountain area installed on the grounds. Understandably, there are scores of dissenters out there against this example of mega-excess.

"LOOK, MA! RAIN ECHOES!!!!"

Good ol' Stormcast....hinted at a couple of rare pop-up showers/storms yesterday in the NC Piedmont, even though conditions for such were pitifully limited...and *poof* there they were late yesterday afternoon! Sad we have to get our jollies this way, eh?

The weekend is upon us...make it a good and safe one, Saddle Pals!
